Vision Implementation Plan (VIP) Roundtable Meeting 

On April 10, 2014 the National Center for Disease Control and Public Health will host the Vision Implementation Plan (VIP) Roundtable Meeting. The overall objective of the Meeting will be discussions around path forward and necessary steps and actions to assist NCDC / Lugar Center in establishing a sustainable nationwide human surveillance system capable of complying with WHO regulations and guidelines as well as discussions how to assist MOA, NFA and LMA in their efforts to implement Georgia’s Animal Health Action Plan 2014.  Read more

US Partners Visit in Terms of Cooperative Biological Engagement Program Executive Review

On February 25-27, 2014 the WHO Mission visited Georgia to review the results of implemented anti-Measles immunization additional activities and planned measures for 2014.

Full Accreditation of NCDC&PH  National Measles/Rubella Laboratory for 2014

Since 2003 National Measles/Rubella Laboratory of the National Center for Disease Control and Public Health is involved into WHO European Regional Measles/Rubella Laboratory Network, which within the Measles/Rubella Global Elimination Program aims to improve surveillance of measles/rubella and rubella congenital syndrome through laboratory confirmation of suspect cases of these diseases. The IFBA is pleased to announce the winners of the 2013 Biosafety Heroes Awards: Drs. Lela Bakanidze and Mahama Touré.

Dr. Lela Bakanidze worked at the Georgian National Center for Disease Control where she served as Head of the Biosafety Regime Commission and contributed to preparing Georgian biosafety regulations and its list of select agents. She was the first Registered Biosafety Professional RBP in the South Caucasus, and was the first president of the Georgian Biosafety Association (GeBSA).

Dr. Mahama Touré founded the “Association de Biosécurité en Côte d’Ivoire (ABCI) and introduced biosafety and biosecurity into the curricula of the University of Alassane Ouattara Côte d’Ivoire. He did all this in a country which has had significant political instability and funding challenges. He continues to advocate for projects to improve biosafety in Côte d’Ivoire.

We congratulate Drs. Bakanidze and Touré, and thank them for their efforts to strengthen biosafety and biosecurity in their countries and regions. For further details and photos, please click here.


Georgia expands laboratory capacity to detect wild poliovirus

Georgia’s national poliomyelitis (polio) laboratory, at the National Center for Disease Control and Public Health in Tbilisi, has been a vital part of the WHO Global Polio Laboratory Network since the 1990s. Its staff conduct important virological investigations of clinical material and environmental samples for the presence of wild polioviruses. Read more

New Subunit vaccines and anthrax

The NATO Science for Peace and Security Programme (SPS) in 2012 had funded a of research programme aiming to identify and study the potential antigen candidates for the new subunit vaccine against anthrax and thus contribute to the development of the improved and more effective vaccine. Within the scope of this project, Georgian researchers in collaboration with the British, Turkish and US scientists are leaded by Prof. Baillie of the School of Pharmacy at Cardiff University. Majority of research activities will be conducted In Georgia under the supervision of Dr. Nino Trapaidze at the R. Lugar Center for Public Health Research of The National Center for Disease, Control and Public Health. Read more


On October 7 – 8, 2013 the Workshop Global Analysis and Assessment of  Sanitation and Drinking Water - GLAAS 2013/2014  was held  at  National Center for Disease Control and Public Health.

On October 1-2 2013 National Center for Disease Control and Public Health (NCDC) hosted a Regional Thematic Training Course Priority Actions for Cancer Control Planning. The training course was conducted in frames of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Technical Cooperation Programme. Participants of the training were from 13 countries of the Eastern Europe and countries of former Soviet Union. Training was conducted as a result of collaboration between NCDC local experts led by Dr. Lela Sturua, Head of the Non-communicable Disease Department, IAEA experts led by Dr. Ronaldo Camacho-Rodriguez, Technical Officer, Programme of Action for Cancer Therapy Office, Department of Nuclear Sciences and Application and WHO country office. Development of Effective Environmental Health Systems in Georgia

On September 30-October 3, 2013 the National Center for Disease Control and Public Health is hosting the visit of EU experts’ mission in the framework of TAIEX project. World Hepatitis Day, 28 July 2013

This is hepatitis. Know it. Confront it

Every year on 28 July, WHO and partners mark World Hepatitis Day to increase the awareness and understanding of viral hepatitis and the diseases that it causes.

Hepatitis viruses A, B, C, D and E can cause acute and chronic infection and inflammation of the liver that can lead to cirrhosis and liver cancer. These viruses constitute a major global health risk with around 240 million people being chronically infected with hepatitis B and around 150 million people chronically infected with hepatitis C. On June 16, 2013  National Center for Disease Control and Public Health of the Ministry of Labour, Health and Social Affairs of Georgia joined cleaning action organized by the initiative of the Ministry of Environment and National Resources Protection of Georgia. Environment protection campaign includes Tbilisi and almost all regions of Georgia. Cleaning action took place in more than 80 places including adjacent areas of historic and cultural monuments, in the vicinity of schools, universities and medical institutions as well as in specially designated areas of national parks and protected areas. Meeting with Representatives of Senate Standing Committee on Public Health, Parliament of Thailand

On May 27, 2013, the Delegation of the Public Health Committee of the Parliament of Thailand, composing of 23 persons and leaded by Mr. Anan Ariyachaipanich, visited the L. Sakvarelidze National Center for Disease Control and Public Health. Dr. Amiran Gamkrelidze, General Director of the Center, made a presentation on Public Health.
The issues concerning healthcare in general, as well as medical insurance and education were discussed at the meeting.

World Asthma Day
May 7, 2013

World Asthma Day is an annual event organized by the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) to improve asthma awareness and care around the world. 
WORLD ASTHMA DAY NEWS
World Asthma Day 2013 will take place on Tuesday, May 7, 2013 and the theme will continue to be "You Can Control Your Asthma." However, this year GINA will also introduce a sub-theme, "It's Time to Control Asthma." We encourage activity organizers around the world to complete the sentence, "It's Time to..." as relevant to their event and target audience. Read more


World Malaria Day, 25 April 2013

Over the last decade, the world has made major progress in the fight against malaria. Since 2000, malaria mortality rates have fallen by more than 25%, and 50 of the 99 countries with ongoing transmission are now on track to meet the 2015 World Health Assembly target of reducing incidence rates by more than 75%. A major scale-up of vector control interventions, together with increased access to diagnostic testing and quality-assured treatment, has been key to this progress. Read more


European Immunization Week

Prevent, Protect, Immunize

WHO Regional Office for Europe declared April 21-27 as the European Immunization Week. The Week aims to draw attention to the importance of immunization.   The goal of European Immunization Week is to increase vaccination coverage by raising awareness of the importance of immunization through  special focus on vulnerable groups of population.
Georgia as a member state of WHO European region takes part in the Immunization Week since 2007. European Immunization Week focuses on the diseases that can be prevented by vaccination (so called vaccine-preventable diseases). Read more


Module Presentation of the Management of Immunization Program

On April 24, 2013 at National Center for Disease Control and Public Health in the framework of Health System Strengthening Project / USAID was held: Electronic Module Presentation of the Management of Immunization Program 

In order to develop the management of immunization program, National Center for Disease Control and Public Health within the Health System Strengthening Project / USAID developed an electronic module of the management of immunization program. Improvement of Logistics of Vaccines is planned within this program. Read more
